The obvious choice for skiing in Europe would be The Alps: France, Austria, Switzerland. But have you ever considered skiing in Bulgaria?
We booked 5 nights and 3 days skiing in Bulgaria, Borovets. They have easy budget airline flights from London/Manchester/Newcastle straight into Sofia and less than a 90 minute transfer you are on the mountain.
The locals are super friendly and keen to get you in their bars and restaurants. We checked out Black Tiger: great mulled wine for apres and The Red Lion: karaoke on request. Breakfast and Dinner was included in our room at Iglika Palace Hotel so lunch was our time to check out the food on offer. Most of the restaurants seem to serve very basic fast food menus however we decided to go for lunch at The Rila Hotel. Definitely the most up market place on the mountain but ridiculously good value. 2 mains and 4 drinks for less than $60 !! Your $$ will go far in Bulgaria.
We did a morning lesson with Samokov Hotel Ski School which was a great intro for Sean who had never been skiing before but after a couple of hours we felt the group was moving a little slow so took the slopes.
There is one Gondola and being 40 years old takes 25 minutes to get to the top and two chair lifts from the bottom. At the top of the gondola there’s another 4/5 lifts so perfect to spend a morning at the top circulating the runs.
Borovets is a perfect place if you are new to skiing, a leisure skier, looking for a good mix of skiing/holiday without paying the Alps price tag.
